Dr Kalina Borska is on a mission: to bridge the gap between dentistry and general medicine. She wants to ensure the next generation of dentists and doctors are equally au fait with each other's disciplines wherever they overlap in the treatment of patients.
She foresees a future in which dental students and medical students will step out of their silos and study alongside each other for a single module that will form an integral part of both a dental or a medical degree.
It will give dental and medical professionals a deeper insight into the other's discipline and enable them to diagnose and treat issues that were previously considered outside their remit or beyond their expertise.
"I want us all - both doctors and dentists - to be able to help patients who have fallen through the cracks between general medicine and dentistry, who feel abandoned,
who feel they've been left to
live out their lives in pain."
"I've developed a clear protocol, a step-by-step guide, to give my fellow professionals a safe and effective way to help such patients.
“I want it to become a standard part of the curriculum in dental schools and medical schools, as it bridges both disciplines.
“I'm dedicating my life to trying to make this happen.”
As she was developing her expertise in airway dentistry and dental sleep medicine, a number of Dr Borska's patients began reporting that interventions she had been making to aid them with bruxing, TMD or sleep apnoea were, somewhat unexpectedly, also helping to relieve their neck or hip pain, persistent headaches and poor posture, as well as improving nasal breathing.
Here, in this fully-illustrated textbook, she lays out in detail her protocol, the work and research that led her to develop it, and the ways in which both dental and medical professionals can use it to transform the lives of patients.
